Editorial – What Does It Take to Be a PM?

 By – Geoffrey C. Hingle
(With some help from Rudyard Kipling’s poem entitled “IF”)

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all doubt you;
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated don’t give way to hating
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can plan-and not make plans your master;
If you can think-and not make, thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to see the requirements you’ve captured
Twisted in implementation to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the designs you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ‘em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your risks
And mitigate them  with one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
to serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with VP’s-nor lose the common touch,
If neither teammates nor customers can hurt you,
If all count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And-which is more- you’ll be a Project Manager who gets a project done!

More about Inc. and the Inc. 500|5000

Methodology

 The 2011 Inc. 500 is ranked according to percentage revenue growth when comparing 2007 to 2010. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by March 31, 2007. Additionally, they had to be U.S.-based, privately held, for profit, and independent—not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies—as of December 31, 2010. (Since then, a number of companies on the list have gone public or been acquired.) The minimum revenue required for 2007 is $100,000; the minimum for 2010 is $2 million. As always, Inc. reserves the right to decline applicants for subjective reasons. Companies on the Inc. 500 are featured in Inc.’s September issue. They represent the top tier of the Inc. 5000, which can be found at www.inc.com/500.

A DECADE OF DELIVERY

PMOLink Celebrates 10th Anniversary

10 Years of Project Delivery Excellence

This November, PMOLink marks an especially important milestone in company history as we celebrate a “Decade of Delivery.”  Over the years, our growth has created challenges, overcoming these challenges has created success, and success has created new growth.  As a result, there is a lot to celebrate on this 10-year anniversary.

With a background derived from work experiences that range from government to private sector, PMOLink was founded on a robust background in successful management of large and technically complex projects.  The business model for PMOLink was derived from the observation that there was a lack of companies offering repeatable solutions targeted at solving real world problems that project managers face on a daily basis.  “We would go to lunch and wonder why there wasn’t a company out there supplying infrastructure support to help project managers be successful,” Geoff Hingle, Founder and CEO recalls.

Noting that there was a trend across many industries to embrace the principles espoused by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and that PMI membership was growing rapidly worldwide, PMOLink was formed.   Using Geoff’s house as the corporate mailing address and dining room tables to print and collate proposals, PMOLink was off and running by the end of 2000.

10 years have passed and PMOLink is now stronger than ever. With a client portfolio spanning across industries ranging from energy, utilities, manufacturing, and construction, to major pharmaceuticals, insurance companies, and government agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service, NASA, U.S. Navy, and FEMA, PMOLink is a testament to resilience and dedication in providing the best possible solutions to customers while never straying from the fundamentals the company was founded on.

A seven-time honoree as one of the best places to work by New Orleans City Business magazine, three-times receiving top honors and slated as one of 3 private companies to watch by North Shore Report magazine, as well as being ranked 2,285 by Inc. 500/5000 on the list of the top 5000 fastest growing corporations in the nation out of a pool of over 32 million for 2010, PMOLink is proud to celebrate “A Decade of Delivery.”

PMOLink currently maintains offices in New Orleans, Houston, San Antonio, and New Jersey and has served customers operating across all 50 states and abroad.

PMOLink Recognized by Inc. Magazine

Inc. Magazine Unveils Its Fourth Annual Exclusive List of America’s Fastest-Growing Private Companies—the Inc. 5000

NEW YORK, August 24, 2010Inc. magazine today ranked PMOLink NO. 2285 on its fourth annual Inc. 5000, an exclusive ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. The list represents the most comprehensive look at the most important segment of the economy—America’s independent-minded entrepreneurs. Music website Pandora, convenience store chain 7-Eleven, Brooklyn Brewery, and Radio Flyer, maker of the iconic children’s red wagon, are among the prominent brands featured on this year’s list.

“The leaders of the companies on this year’s Inc. 5000 have figured out how to grow their businesses during the longest recession since the Great Depression,” said Inc. president Bob LaPointe. “The 2010 Inc. 5000 showcases a particularly hardy group of entrepreneurs.”

The 2010 Inc. 5000, unveiled today on Inc.com, serves as a unique illustration of the profound changes taking place in the U.S. economy. The Government Services sector showed the biggest gain in terms of the number of companies on the list, up 33 percent from last year to 335 companies. Government Services was also the second-fastest-growing sector in terms of median revenue growth, posting a 202 percent gain over the 2006-2009 measuring period. More than half of these companies are based in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. The fastest-growing sector by median revenue growth was Real Estate, now just a tiny group of 38 young, small companies, which showed 231 percent median growth over the period. (There were 121 Real Estate firms on the inaugural Inc. 5000 in 2007.) Business Products & Services is the top industry by number of companies on the list (640) and total revenue ($80.7 billion), while Health is the biggest by total employment (287,726  jobs).

Despite the fact that most of this year’s measuring period of 2006-2009 took place during the latest recession, aggregate revenue among the companies on the list actually increased to $321.6 billion, up more than 50 percent from last year. The effects of the recession are seen, however, in the median three-year growth rate, which dropped to 96 percent from last year’s 126 percent. This year’s Inc. 5000 employ a record 1.4 million people, up from one million on last year’s list. With unemployment remaining stubbornly high, policymakers and business leaders will do well to look to the Inc. 5000 companies for fresh ideas on achieving growth and creating jobs.

Complete results of the Inc. 5000, including company profiles and an interactive database that can be sorted by industry, region, and other criteria, can be found on www.inc.com/5000.
